So I want to buy my first pole/rig not counting what I had as a child/teen from my dad but I don't know where to start. Won't be doing anything deep (at least not for starters) so it will be shore and dock fishing mainly. Where do I begin and what supplies do I really "need"?

The most reliable, bullet-proof reels are Zebco. Many pros will argue nuances of their titanium this and carbon-graphite that ... but you can buy a LOT of gasoline and/or beer for the price of one of their uber-reels. Professional-grade rods can set you back many more gallons and/or six-packs.
The venerable Zebco 33 is the best-selling fishing reel for a reason. They work! Zebco Combo's are inexpensive:

For continuous, abusive, saltwater fishing ... try the Zebco 33SW

Thank you so much for the help and info. Now I have a better place to start looking!

Lake TOHO information request

I am on the West Coast and thought about bringing the boat over and checking out Lake Toho over the Memorial Day weekend. Can anyone give me some insight on what to expect.  Most of the information I can find is on the fishing but we are more into the raft ups and just enjoying the boating experience.  Any advice or warnings would be greatly appreciated. See More
