New Here- Boating in Central Florida, Glenn, Lake George, Disappearing Island, etc.

I just saw this site on Craigslist and thought I would join. There doesnt appear to be any introductions forum, so I will do it here. I am John, I am married with one daughter. Wife is Chris and daughter is Natasia. We boat frequently, trying to at least get out on the water once a week depending on our schedules. I have been boating since I was a little kid. We currently have a 21ft Tahoe bowrider, but are looking to buy a 25ft or so cabin boat so we can spend the night out on the water. We often go to the Glen off Lake George and Dissapearing Island. We also frequent many of the restaurants on the water. Well thats a breif intro.

I'm new here myself, but welcome!! What restaurants on the water do you recommend? Also, any idea how long of a ride it is to the Glen from Orlando area?

Take care,
Ryan
If you put in at the Sanford boat ramp at I4 and 17/92, its about a 90 minute boat ride from there. A lot of people put in up in Astor at around where 40 goes over the St Johns. Then its about 30 minutes. We dry store our boat on the St Johns in Deland, and its about an hour boat ride from there. You are welcome to join us, there is a public ramp at our marina too.
That sounds awesome! Is the majority of the ride a no-wake zone, or is it really just that far? Also, how is the actual water...shallow? many hazards? I am relatively new to this boat, so I am trying to take easy trips to begin with.
Very easy trip. No hazards and not any shallow places unless the river is low. But not really that bad and not all the time. Mostly full 25mph or so. Its just pretty far. If you look at a map it is located just off Lake George. Plan a complete day and if a storm rolls in, plan on waiting it out in the Glen, you dont want to get caught on Lake George in a storm. We have a lot of friends that spend the weekend there, but we only have a bowrider right now. A lot of Orlando folks put in up in Astor. Makes for a quicker boat ride, but we enjoy the ride almost as much as the destination. make sure you are completely coast guard complient though cause they check. We get stopped about 3 times a season. Off seasons are not bad, not as many out at that time.

As for restaurants. We eat at Shady Oaks right in Deland, Captains Cove in Sanford at the Boat Tree marina, Castaways up in Astor, Swamphouse Grill in Debary. There is also Blackwater Inn up in Astor and Bonnie's in Deland, but we had some bad experiances at both on several occasions, so we havent been in over a year. Those are on the St Johns River, there are a bunch on the intercoastal too.
That sounds pretty good, thanks for the info! I checked, and Astor is a bit of a drive, even in a car...looks like it would take about and hour and 15 minutes to get there from where I am in Longwood. Not sure where in Deland your Marina is, but that would probably be ideal.

I am going to get the free CG check done here pretty soon after I get a few things taken care of such as mounting the fire extinguisher so I will be in full compliance.

How is Lake George? Looks massive, but I have heard they do bomb testing there? I'm guessing that isn't much of an issue?

Maybe sometime early next year we can put together a trip up there...
Lake George is huge, but very shallow. That is why when it storms it kicks up big time. No bomb testing anymore as far as I know.

We live right off I-4 at exit 116. The marina is about 10 to 15 minutes from there. So from Longwood probably no more than 35 or so minutes, depending on how far you are from I4. Our ramp is at 44 where it crosses over the St Johns called Boat Show Marina. There is a large public ramp out front and a private ramp in the back where the marina is. There is a small boat store and Bonnie;s restaurant there too.

We go there frequently, especially when its warmer, and anytime you wanna go you are welcome. I will keep it posted when we plan to go.
We love the Swamphouse Grill!!
New to this site. Usually launch at the Volusia Co. ramp at 17/92. Like going south on the St. Johns, since there are no speed limits. However, you need to know where you are going since there are no channel markers. Also enjoy launching at Porkey's on the north side of Lake George and going up the river to Palatka. We really like taking the boat or jet ski over to Longboat Key. There are alot of places to eat and explore. The water over there is calmer and clearer than the Atlantic side.

Hi John!

I just got back into boating myself and am new to the Florida waters, nice to meet you looking forward to some Islands and general fishing fun chaos. I love having a little cabin you can crash out in.

I'm downtown Orlando right now but your area seems interesting!
hey everyone. Im new to this website also. NIce to meet everyone. Im interested in the boat ramp you guys are all talking about. The one off of i4 and 17-92...Can you really run most of the way from there to lake george? I usually launch at the astor ramp, but id rather have an hour boat ride then an hour truck ride. Does anyone know about how many miles it is from that ramp to silver glenn, curious if i can make it there and back on a tank, or if id have to stop. .. I read people looking for good restaurants, i go to daytona for most of my boating, and i pretty much live at disappearing island, but the best place to eat on the ICW is at deck down under in port orange. Its about a 20 minute boat ride north of the island, just under the dunlawton bridge. There's is also a great ramp across the river from it that i usually launch at. anywho... thanks for the info guys!
Great ramp at I-4 & 17/92. There are several no wake zones getting to Hontoon Island. First one is very short at Higbanks, then a real long one at Blue Springs and then Hontoon Island is just past Blue Springs. It takes about an hour to get to Hontoon form I-4 ramp. From there to Astor is probably another 20-30 mins. Nice cruise when not idling in the summer heat.
if i am fairly new to boating and have a older boat should i be going out by my self or is it a good idea to always take someone with me ,,cant find any friends interested in boating

Lake TOHO information request

I am on the West Coast and thought about bringing the boat over and checking out Lake Toho over the Memorial Day weekend. Can anyone give me some insight on what to expect.  Most of the information I can find is on the fishing but we are more into the raft ups and just enjoying the boating experience.  Any advice or warnings would be greatly appreciated. See More
