If you live in Central Florida and are looking for a new place to boat, St. Johns River and nearby Silver Glen are two must-do boat excursions.
Many people who boat Central Florida waterways know that one of the best days spent out on your boat is at Silver Glen on Lake George. There are even boating groups dedicated to enjoying this great location with names like “Boat the Glenn.” What the “Boat the Glenn” groups know, and you definitely want to discover for yourself, is that Silver Glen is one of the most beautiful – and most fun – boating locations in Central Florida.
Silver Glen is located on the SW corner of Lake George and is part of the Ocala National Forest. Silver Glen Springs is one of three major springs that feed into Lake George (Salt Springs enters through Salt Creek and Juniper Springs enters through Juniper Creek). All three springs are on the west side of Lake George and help contribute to the excellent bass fishing in Lake George.
The waters of Silver Glen are a wonderful 72 degrees year round, and there are always lots of boaters looking to have a great time. And because of the clarity of this natural fresh water spring, Silver Glen also offers excellent snorkeling and swimming. Another bonus when you “boat the Glenn” is that there is no fee to enjoy the nearby Ocala National Forest park and picnic areas.
If you typically boat Orlando nearby waterways, the experience you will have when you “boat the Glenn” will have you wanting to head back to Silver Glen over and over. You’ll meet boaters from all over Central Florida, as well as other nearby Florida areas.
If you want another Central Florida place to boat, St Johns River offers both a long scenic trip along the river, as well as great camping and many recreational boating areas. Hontoon Island State Park is one of these great places to check out. Only accessible by boat, Hontoon Island offers camp sites as well as cabin rentals.
If you’re looking for someplace to stay that is a bit less rustic than what Hontoon Island has to offer, you can check out Blair’s Jungle Den. Located on the St John’s River between Lake George and Astor Bridge in Astor, FL, Blair’s Jungle Den has several different room types (single, double, efficiencies, etc.) as well as nearby restaurants, hunting and fishing, and boat ramp accessibility. There is even an RV and Trailer Park available for longer stays.
If you’ve only done the boat Orlando waterways excursions, it’s time to venture out further into Central Florida waters. Check out Silver Glen and St. John’s River on your next boating weekend adventure!
